Times are Tough and Turbulent. The world is currently in a downturn bordering on recession and you need to hussle to grow your business. The good news is that the stockmarket is rising and economists predict better times ahead in 2025.
Having a positive, useful Mindset is the key to success! Fortunes can be made or lost in a recession, as there are many opportunities for the innovative and motivated. Many tired old business owners decide to give up and retire when there is a downturn – leaving more customers for others.
Just after the GFC, in 1988, I was helping lots of businesses that were in trouble. Sales had slumped and everybody was depressed. The solution was to shift their mindset, increase their resilience and focus on the things that WERE working. Celebrating any win or any success – no matter how small.
Stop comparing yourself to your past sales results made in easier times. Make the most of what you already have – every enquiry, every customer, every web visitor, every sale and every staff member.
Be a better leader in these down times. Here are some of my favourite mantras for tough times:
- “You can outsell a recession or downturn”
- “In good times grow profit and in tough times grow market share”
- “You can’t CUT your way to success. Don’t sack your best people”
- “People think good times last forever (they don’t) and bad times last forever (they don’t)”
- “The Economy and Business growth comes in waves – enjoy the ride”
Once you have sorted out your own mindset and engaged your team, this book by UK Consultant Nicholas Bate is full of practical ideas for Tough Times.

BEING A BETTER LEADER (MADE EASIER)
One of the first business books I read was a Dale Carnegie book called “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. The book was written in 1936 and contains the recipe for business success. Here is a summary:
FUNDAMENTAL TECHNIQUES IN HANDLING PEOPLE
- Don’t criticize, condemn or complain
- Give honest & sincere appreciation
- Arouse in the other person an eager want
SIX WAYS TO MAKE PEOPLE LIKE YOU
- Become genuinely interested in other people
- Smile!
- Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language
- Be a Good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
- Talk in terms of the other persons interests
- Make the other person feel important
WIN PEOPLE TO YOUR WAY OF THINKING
- The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it
- Show respect for the other person’s opinions. Never say “You’re Wrong”
- If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically
- Begin in a friendly way
- Get the other person saying “Yes, Yes” immediately (start with the agreed items)
- Let the other person do a great deal of the talking
- Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers
- Try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view
- Be sympathetic with the other person’s ideas and desires
- Appeal to nobler motives
- Dramatize your ideas
- Throw down a challenge – suggest a higher goal or purpose for them
HOW TO BE A BETTER LEADER
- A leader’s job often includes changing people’s attitudes & behaviours
- Begin with praise and honest appreciation
- Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly
- Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person
- Ask questions instead of giving direct orders
- Let the other person save face
- Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be “Hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise”
- Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to
- Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct
I had that list up on my office wall for years and regularly repeated those ideas to myself and others – using them as my “Mantra” for success. It turns out that what you repeatedly say to yourself (your “little voice” in your head) changes and guides your behaviour over time.
Positive thinking and positive behaviour starts with having a positive mental attitude and in tough times – it’s essential.
